A few things about Deniz

Golden evening light over the rooftops of Istanbul, the Galata Tower rising above the city as gulls scatter across the sky.
Istanbul, golden hour

I'm Deniz — a reader, a watcher, and a habitual looker-at-things. I live in Istanbul, where the light off the Bosphorus has a way of making the most ordinary morning look like a film still, and where I'm forever the first one up: the best sentences, I've found, tend to arrive before the city fully wakes. I studied Sociology at Boğaziçi University, which turned out to be a long and formal excuse to stay curious about why people do what they do — and that curiosity is really what this whole journal is made of, whether I'm standing too long in front of a painting, rewatching a quiet film for its light, turning a good coat over in my hands, or disappearing three chapters deep into something Russian. When I'm not reading or wandering a gallery I'm usually moving — a run, a long walk, anything to balance all the sitting still — and, improbably, I could talk you through the architecture of a really good salad. Deniz is written from the sofa, with love, and I'm glad you're here.
